64 of 107 tracked resort beaches expected clear or light in August

Each bar is the share of that destination’s beaches expected clear or light this month. An empty bar isn’t missing data — it means the sargassum belt is heavy there in August (the open, east-facing Mexican coast is worst mid-summer).

What’s coming

Regional outlook
The University of South Florida’s latest outlook puts the Atlantic sargassum belt near record levels for late summer. Expect elevated arrivals on the east-facing coast — Riviera Maya and Tulum especially — into September, while leeward Cozumel and north-facing Isla Mujeres and Costa Mujeres stay comparatively clear. The guide

Every stretch of coast, rated

Usually clear

A north-coast island, so the Atlantic belt largely passes offshore. Negril's west-facing Seven Mile Beach and the south coast stay clearest; Ocho Rios and Rose Hall see only occasional light influxes May–Oct.

Depends entirely on the coast

East-facing Punta Cana (Bávaro, Arena Gorda) catches the belt directly and runs heavy in peak season — but the reef-protected Cap Cana coves, the Saona-shielded La Romana/Bayahibe coast, and north-coast Puerto Plata stay far clearer.

How we rate a resort beach

  1. We start with the Quintana Roo beach-monitoring network’s near-daily readings for ~67 individual beaches.
  2. We map every resort to the beach it fronts and which way that beach faces — orientation is what decides exposure.
  3. We combine the live reading with that structural exposure into one 0–100 Clear-Beach score, refreshed daily.
  4. Satellite data (USF / NOAA) sees seaweed offshore, not on the sand — so we use it for the regional outlook, never as a resort’s status.

Questions, answered

How do you know if a resort's beach is clear of sargassum?

We combine the Quintana Roo beach-monitoring network's near-daily readings for individual beaches with each resort's beach orientation — the direction a beach faces is what decides how much sargassum it catches. That gives a resort-by-resort read, not a vague regional one.

Is a “clear” rating a guarantee?

No. Sargassum shifts with wind, currents and weather and can change within a day, and beach cleanups vary. Our ratings are planning estimates, not guarantees — always confirm current conditions with the resort before you travel. See our full disclaimer.

Which Mexican Caribbean beaches stay clearest?

The leeward and north-facing beaches: Cozumel's west coast, Isla Mujeres' north tip (Playa Norte), and the Costa/Playa Mujeres stretch just north of Cancún. They sit away from the open Caribbean where the sargassum belt arrives.

Why do some beaches always get more sargassum?

Geography. The Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt drifts in from the east and southeast, so east-facing open beaches — most of the Cancún Hotel Zone, the Riviera Maya and Tulum — take the brunt, while sheltered north- and west-facing beaches stay clearer.

Can you book a clear-beach resort for me?

Yes — a Pixie Vacations advisor can match you to a resort with a reliably clear beach and handle the whole booking, at no extra cost. Request a free quote.
